YouTube CEO: We've Cut Amount Of Time Americans Watch "Controversial Content" By 70%

Clear Politics. December 2, 2019
YouTube CEO Susan Wojcicki tells Lesley Stahl what the video platform is doing about hate speech in an interview Sunday on the CBS newsmagazine program '60 Minutes.'

Wojcicki told '60 Minutes' that Google employs 10,000 people to focus on "controversial content." She described their schedule, which includes time for therapy. Stahl also said there are reports that the "monitors" are "beginning to buy the conspiracy theories."

"What we really had to do was tighten our enforcement of that to make sure we were catching everything and we use a combination of people and machines," Wojcicki explained. "So Google as a whole has about 10,000 people that are focused on controversial content."

Canada minister is working with his colleagues to combat “online hate"

Breitbart.  16 Dec 2019
Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, recently made infamous over resurfaced blackface photos, has instructed his ministers to create new legislation aimed at tackling “hate speech” on social media.
The mandate letter, sent to Canada’s Minister of Heritage, calls for legislation to be drawn up imposing “significant penalties” on social media companies that do not remove so-called hate speech within 24 hours.

The letter singles out “hate speech” for special attention, before moving on to other items like child exploitation and terrorism.

Create new regulations for social media platforms, starting with a requirement that all platforms remove illegal content, including hate speech, within 24 hours or face significant penalties. This should include other online harms such as radicalization, incitement to violence, exploitation of children, or creation or distribution of terrorist propaganda.

The White House will host a meeting with tech firms about “violent extremism online”

US-POLITICS-PROTEST
Aug 8, 2019   Forbes
Topline: The White House will host a meeting with tech firms on Friday about “violent extremism online” in the wake of last weekend’s mass shootings, which raised questions over the role of Web services companies in moderating hate speech on the internet.
  • White House spokesperson Judd Deere said on Wednesday that the meeting will include “senior administration officials” and representatives from a “range of companies.”
  • The announcement followed a visit by President Donald Trump to El Paso, Texas, and Dayton, Ohio, on Wednesday, where he met with survivors and first responders. His visit was met with protests, while El Paso Congresswoman Veronica Escobar condemned Trump’s “racist and hateful words & actions.”
  • The suspected El Paso gunman, who killed 22 people on Saturday when he attacked Walmart shoppers, posted a hate-filled manifesto targeting the Hispanic community on extremist message board 8chan, minutes before the attack.
What we don’t know: Which firms will attend or whether Trump will be present.
Key background: The meeting follows a pledge by Trump to order the Department of Justice to work with state and federal agencies, as well as social media companies, to “develop tools that can detect mass shooters before they strike.”
