The frivolity of young men and young women who profess to believe the truth.

Breath of Life Ministries, a Seventh-day Adventist ministry, is holding a youth-convocation in January of 2016. In this convocation the gospel group The Walls will be performing. This Grammy-nominated group is made up of Darell, Rhea, Paco and Ahjah Walls. This group was elevated to stardom by “gospel” performer Kirk Franklin. While this event seems like a great idea, it is actually destroying the youth and their love for what is sacred.

When a guest-performer of any sort is invited to churches, it is automatically assumed that the inviters are in agreement with the lifestyle of the performers and are encouraging the behaviors that they exhibit. One cannot tell the difference between the world’s music and the music produced by so-called gospel musicians. In essence, those who not only perform, but also those who invite and promote this type of music are saying that there is no difference between being a Christian and being a part of the world. Upon hearing the first few seconds of this worldly type of music, I am reminded of the prophets of Baal. Contrasted with the prophets of Baal, the prophet Elijah approached God softly, quietly and reverently, and God answered. This is the way in which God’s people are to approach Him. God is not to be approached by screaming, dancing and carrying on. Does this win souls to Christ or bring one’s mind to the contemplation of heavenly themes?

Before we can assume anything about this group, The Walls, let us take a look at how they got started and who helped them get started. It is said that Kirk Franklin at one time observed the Sabbath; but he is now a Sunday-keeper and a “gospel” artist. A man who had access to the truth but denied it, has become famous and has taken religious musicians, mentored them on how to become famous in the music industry. It would be crazy to think that there would not be a denying of faith in this process. This indicates that Seventh-day Adventists are bringing people in who are denying the faith while holding onto a form of godliness, to entertain their congregants.

On the advertisement for this convocation, pastors and members alike are rejoicing over the group’s appearance. Let us assume that The Walls cannot presently see any harm in what they are doing and they truly believe that the Lord is being glorified through their music, then there would be no condemnation (see John 3:19). However Seventh-day Adventist pastors should know better, and if they do not, they certainly have the opportunity to know better, and will be judged accordingly. They should be sounding the alarm and warning their members against attending such events, but instead, they are expressing their joy and anticipation. This love of the world is apparent in the churches and in the homes.

“I feel alarmed as I witness everywhere the frivolity of young men and young women who profess to believe the truth. God does not seem to be in their thoughts. Their minds are filled with nonsense. Their conversation is only empty, vain talk. They have a keen ear for music, and Satan knows what organs to excite to animate, engross, and charm the mind so that Christ is not desired. The spiritual longings of the soul for divine knowledge, for a growth in grace, are wanting. I was shown that the youth must take a higher stand and make the word of God the man of their counsel and their guide. Solemn responsibilities rest upon the young, which they lightly regard. The introduction of music into their homes, instead of inciting to holiness and spirituality, has been the means of diverting their minds from the truth. Frivolous songs and the popular sheet music of the day seem congenial to their taste. The instruments of music have taken time which should have been devoted to prayer. Music, when not abused, is a great blessing; but when put to a wrong use, it is a terrible curse. It excites, but does not impart that strength and courage which the Christian can find only at the throne of grace while humbly making known his wants and, with strong cries and tears, pleading for heavenly strength to be fortified against the powerful temptations of the evil one. Satan is leading the young captive. Oh, what can I say to lead them to break his power of infatuation! He is a skillful charmer luring them on to perdition. {AH 407.3.4}

When I spoke with a Breath of Life Ministry representative, I was told that an estimated one thousand people will be attending this event. One thousand souls will be live in attendance listening to these songs, and as a result will become changed, not to mention those who will view online and those who will watch the rebroadcasts. The problem with this whole situation is that a large number of youth are being targeted and will gather, while the hosts, promoters, and pastors are endorsing music and lifestyles that are contrary to biblical teachings. While the youth watch The Walls perform, they are going to be changed, consciously and subconsciously. Though nonverbally, they are being told that painting their faces and wearing vain accessories are okay. They are being shown that by adding Christian words and principles to Babylonian beats and instruments, God is being glorified and pleased, while their flesh is also being gratified.

What is so dangerous is the concept that unholy things can be mixed with holy things and still please God. The more these types of groups are presented to our churches and especially the youth, the more the youth will buy into this concept of “worship.” The traits of this subtle change in philosophy in the Seventh-day Adventist churches can be clearly seen. The women think that it is okay for them to dress immodestly in general and also while they sing in the choirs. A generation that is living in the grey is being raised (see Judges 2:10). Those with this mindset believe that the purity of God’s character limits them; however the darkness of sin limits their peace on this earth and ultimately costs them eternal life. Therefore they parley with the devil and are allowed to do so while inside the church.

We need to warn these perishing youth. By example we are able to point them to Christ. Converted musicians need to share the gospel through their gift from God, unmingled with worldly methods. We need to be the difference in the world, modeling a pure and ennobled life with earnest self-denial and warning, thus the promise will be ours, “They will hear the voice of Jesus, sweeter than any music that ever fell on mortal ear, saying to them, Your warfare is accomplished. ‘Come, ye blessed of My Father, inherit the kingdom prepared for you from the foundation of the world.’ Matthew 25:34.” {AA 34.1}
